Retrospective Reflection
My time in the Honors College has been instrumental in shaping me into the scholar and future clinical psychologist I aspire to be. Through rigorous coursework, research opportunities, and leadership experiences, I have developed critical skills that will support my career in psychology. This reflection highlights key experiences that have contributed to my growth, how they align with the Honors College Learning Goals, and their connection to my professional aspirations.
Research & Lab Experience – Neuroscience & Addiction Studies
-
Growth & Skill Development: Conducting research at the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute allowed me to develop advanced laboratory skills, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. I worked on projects related to addiction, impulsivity, and neurocircuitry, which deepened my understanding of behavioral health.
-
Connection to Career Goals: This experience solidified my passion for clinical psychology, particularly in addiction and mental health treatment. It provided me with hands-on experience that will directly translate to my PsyD training and future clinical research.
-
Honors College Learning Goals: Intellectual curiosity, interdisciplinary learning, and research-driven inquiry.
Honors Capstone Project – Neural Mechanisms of Addiction: The Role of the Dorsomedial Striatum
-
Growth & Skill Development: My Honors Capstone Project focused on studying the Dorsomedial Striatum (DMS) and its role in addiction-related behaviors. Through my research at the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, I examined how neural circuits in the DMS influence impulsivity, compulsive behaviors, and motivation—key components of substance use disorders (SUDs). Using rodent models and the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task (5-CSRTT), I investigated how changes in DMS activity contribute to maladaptive decision-making seen in addiction. This research honed my technical lab skills, including electrophysiology, behavioral testing, and data analysis, while strengthening my ability to critically evaluate complex neuropsychological processes.
-
Connection to Career Goals: Understanding neural mechanisms of addiction is crucial for developing effective interventions for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and other substance use disorders. My work in this area has deepened my interest in clinical psychology, particularly in neuropsychology and addiction treatment. The research experience has prepared me for graduate training in a PsyD program, where I aim to bridge neuroscience and clinical practice to improve therapeutic approaches for individuals struggling with addiction.
-
Honors College Learning Goals: This project aligns with interdisciplinary learning, research-driven inquiry, and professional development. By combining neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral analysis, I have gained valuable insight into addiction as both a biological and psychological phenomenon, reinforcing the need for evidence-based clinical interventions.
Study Abroad – National & Homeland Security in London
-
Growth & Skill Development: Studying abroad in London exposed me to international perspectives on national security, intelligence, and forensic psychology. I engaged with UK government officials and national security experts, expanding my understanding of global policies.
-
Connection to Career Goals: This experience broadened my worldview and enhanced my ability to analyze behavioral patterns in different cultural contexts—an essential skill for working with diverse populations in clinical settings.
-
Honors College Learning Goals: Global citizenship, interdisciplinary learning, and professional development.
Leadership & Recognition – Top 100 Student Award
-
Growth & Skill Development: Receiving the Top 100 Award recognized my dedication to academic excellence, leadership, and service. This honor reflected my ability to balance rigorous coursework, research, and extracurricular involvement.
-
Connection to Career Goals: Leadership is a crucial skill in psychology, whether in research, clinical practice, or advocacy. This recognition affirmed my ability to thrive in demanding environments—a skill necessary for pursuing a PsyD.
-
Honors College Learning Goals: Leadership, academic excellence, and community engagement.
Conclusion
My Honors College journey has shaped me into a well-rounded, research-driven, and globally aware scholar. The experiences I’ve gained have directly prepared me for graduate school and my career in clinical psychology. By integrating research, leadership, and real-world applications, the Honors College has equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health and forensic psychology.
